Modern Jive has a rich history rooted in the original dance movements of the early 1920s, from which the Jitterbug and Tango emerged. In the 1980s, the dance movements found renewed life through the street clubs of Ceroc, Leroc, and French Jive, from which, they took their names. In the 1990s, the three names were summarised as Modern Jive by Christine Keeble. All forms of Modern Jive include dances from the Swing and Rock and Roll eras, and new steps added by teachers of the dance movement.

In Modern Jive, the dance is led by the male, however, when three people become involved in the dance it is known as Double-Trouble. Modern Jive can be danced to many forms of music, as long as, the beat is between 108 (120) to 160 beats per minute. Rock Step was introduced to help the beginner learn the steps of the dance but it confused those who progressed and accomplished the dance and it is now, simply, Step Footwork. Step Footwork forces a change every beat and slows the velocity of the dance.

There are many Modern Jive events, with some clubs featuring nights specifically designed for these events. There are championships and weekender—three day events that begin on Friday evening—events in Modern Jive.

Modern Jive Competitions are judged on 4-criteria:
• Musicality—How well the couple interprets the music through their movements.
• Content and Execution—The variety of moves and how well they are executed.
• Style and Technique—The style of dance they have chosen and the technique they use to perform it.
• Presentation—The style of the dance, the dress, etc.
