Can also release the upper handhold and spin the lady out by pulling with the lower hand when the lady is in a hammerlock (with her hand behind her back).
A Salsa exit is for the man to release the lower hands during the first part of a forwards basic. And then lead himself into an anticlockwise turn under the left-to-right hands to face the lady during the backwards basic, having prepared (himself) during the forwards basic with a slight side step on his left foot, rather than a close to his right foot. In fact, don't even need to keep the hand high, can just rotate and swap hands behind the back.
For a more Salsa-style look, the man can lower the raised hands back to waist level (over the lower hands) when the lady is in a hammerlock position. This effectively “locks” the lady in position; several Manhattans or walks can be led in this position (or Salsa forward/backward basics).
